India targets higher domestic production and plans to reduce its dependence on imports despite the global geopolitical turmoil that put pressure on supply chain.
The country is expected to produce 911 million tonnes of coal this fiscal year and plans to further raise production to 1.3 billion tonnes during FY 2025-26.
India's coal imports in FY2018-19 were 235 million tonnes, which rose by 5.6% to 249 million tonnes in FY2019-20. Imports fell to 215 million tonnes in FY 2020-21 and further to 209 million tonnes in FY 2021-22.
Imports were registered at 186 million tonnes till December in FY 2022-23.
