Coal remained the most important energy source for electricity generation in Germany in 2022, according to preliminary results published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
Approximately one-third of the electricity generated in Germany came from coal-fired power plants last year, with generation up 8.4% from a year earlier, according to Destatis.
This was attributed to the "tense situation" on the gas market due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the associated sharp rise in natural gas prices, resulting in an 11.3% decline in the share of electricity generated from natural gas.
Wind power was the second most important energy source, with the share up to 24.1% of total generation from 14.7% a year earlier, despite the relatively windless year.
Generation from solar power systems, mainly imported from China, increased 19.5% year and year and reached a share of 10.6%.
The German government is striving to raise the country's solar capacity to at least 400 GW by 2040, and the German Solar Industry Association anticipates a double-digit percentage rate of growth in the domestic PV market in 2023.
To realize carbon neutrality by 2045, Germany needs to lift the share of renewable energies in gross electricity consumption from around 44% in 2022 to at least 80% by 2030.
