Japan imported 14.53 million tonnes of coal in February, inching down 0.2% year on year, preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance showed on March 16.

The imports were worth 652.56 billion yen ($4.92 billion), soaring 74.1% year on year, the data showed.

Imports from the U.S. surged 91.5% on the year to 1.41 million tonnes, while the value jumped 186.4% year on year to 5.85 billion yen. Receipts from Russia slumped 85.6% to 225,000 tonnes, while value of the imports fell 76.8% to 9.91 billion yen.

In February, Japan imported 9.49 million tonnes of thermal coal, up 1.4% year on year, with import value at 447.60 billion yen, skyrocketing 106.3% year on year.

Thermal coal imports from the U.S. were 568,000 tonnes, up 70.9% year on year; value rose 209.7% on the year to 229.9 billion yen. Russian thermal coal imports fell 72.9% year on year to 225,000 tonnes, with value down 57.6% year on year to 9.91 billion yen.

Japan imported 6.40 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas in February, inching down 9.9% year on year; value rose 12.8% on the year to 761.37 billion yen.
