Vietnam has taken a significant step towards ensuring its national energy security by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Laos, aimed at a five-year cooperation in the coal sector, according to a report by local media VietNamNet.
The agreement, which was signed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam and the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Laos, will see Vietnam importing approximately 20 million tonnes of coal from Laos annually over the next five years.
The import quantity is set to be contingent upon market demand and the prevailing conditions within Vietnam, the report said. This strategic move is anticipated to support Vietnam's energy transition and bolster the country's energy security. Concurrently, the MOU will assist Laos in maximizing the potential of its coal sector and advancing its exploitation efforts.
Laos has been a crucial supplier of coal, ores, and minerals to Vietnam in recent years. Last year alone, Vietnam imported 1.8 million tonnes of ores and minerals valued at $78.2 million from its neighboring country. In the first half of 2023, Vietnam spent approximately $31.6 million to acquire 900,000 tonnes of ores and coals from Laos.
Beyond coal trade, both nations have actively engaged in several energy-focused investment and cooperation projects. These endeavors include joint ventures in hydropower projects and the development of transmission grids, further deepening the energy ties between Vietnam and Laos.
Of notable significance, Vietnam's Prime Minister recently greenlit a proposal to import electricity from diverse energy projects in Laos, with a combined capacity of 2,689 MW. This initiative reflects Vietnam's commitment to diversifying its energy sources and seeking regional collaborations to meet its growing energy demands.
Furthermore, the two countries have established multiple 220kV power transmission lines, effectively facilitating the seamless exchange of electricity between the neighboring nations.
