Coal output in the United States was estimated at 11.21 million short tons (10.17 million tonnes), down 2.33% week on week and a slight 0.11% decrease year on year over the week ending July 22, showed data from Energy Information Administration on July 27.
Coal production in Wyoming and Montana combined was estimated at 5.06 million short tons, falling 1.79% from a week ago and 9.31% from the previous year.
Illinois's coal output was estimated at 752,000 short tons, dipping 0.77% compared to the week-ago level but rising 30.11% on the year, while Appalachian coal production was estimated at 3.11 million short tons, 2.7% lower than the week prior yet up 10.41% from a year ago.
Over the first 29 weeks of 2023, US coal output totaled 329.6 million short tons, a marginal 0.1% increase from 329.3 million short tons in 2022.
U.S. rail coal shipments were 64,474 rail wagons, declining 1,157 from a week earlier and 1,160 from the preceding year. The year-to-date rail coal shipments totaled 1.89 million wagons, a small 0.7% rise year on year.
