Yunnan province, a frontrunner in green energy of China, achieved a significant milestone as its grid-connected photovoltaic capacity exceeded 10 GW, according to the Yunnan provincial energy bureau.
The recent adding of 100 MW of grid-connected photovoltaic capacity has brought the total new capacity so far this year to 4.82 GW. The overall photovoltaic capacity thereby totaled 10.07 GW, marking the province's entry into the league of 10-GW giants.
As a province prioritizing green development, Yunnan has around 70% of hydropower capacity in its power mix, reaching 81.46 GW. However, in the recent years, the drawdown of reservoirs amid extreme weather patterns has subdued hydropower generation and threatened its energy security, thereby prompting the green hub to seek alternatives from solar and wind development.
Yunnan's energy industry has now become its largest pillar industry, boasting world-leading proportions in green energy installed capacity, green electricity generation, clean energy transactions, and the share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption.
The province ranks at the nation's forefront in wind and solar power utilization hours, and its clean electricity transmitted to eastern provinces of China has surpassed 1,500 TWh through the West-to-East project. The integration of green energy with sustainable manufacturing is accelerating.
Abundant in resources such as hydropower, wind power, and solar energy, Yunnan continues to transform its resource and ecological advantages into developmental strengths, positioning itself as a trailblazer in the field of "Green Energy."
As of July 24, the total installed capacity of new energy (mostly wind and solar) in Yunnan reached 22.36 GW, accounting for 20.6% of the total installed capacity.
