China's massive Xiluodu hydropower station has generated over 556.7 terawatt hours of electricity in its first 10 years of operation, according to state media.
The Xiluodu dam, located on the Jinsha River along the border between Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, is currently China's third-largest hydropower station and the fourth largest in the world.
It is a crucial source of power for China's ambitious "West-to-East" electricity transmission project.Construction of the Xiluodu station began in 2005, and the first generators came online in July 2013.
By June 2014, all of its units had commenced operation. The 13.86-GW facility is a key part of China's strategy to meet increasing energy demand through renewable and low-carbon sources.
The milestone at Xiluodu comes as China races to curb its dependence on coal and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The country aims to have non-fossil fuels make up around 25% of its total energy mix by 2030 and more than 80% by 2060, up from 15.9% in 2020.
