China Taiwan's coal imports in March touched a new low for the same period in the past 10 years, preliminary customs data showed.
In March, the region's coal imports totaled 4.39 million tonnes, down 18.78% year on year yet up 1.2% month on month. This was the lowest imports for every March since 2014.
The import value for coal in March was $1.1 billion, down 4.59% year on year and 1.36% month on month. The average import price was calculated at $250.73/t, up 17.47% year on year but down 2.52% month on month.
Australia remained the largest source of coal imports to Taiwan in March, totaling 2.59 million tonnes (-2.94% YoY, +6.5% MoM), followed by Indonesia's 0.93 million tonnes (-12.11% YoY, +51.13% MoM) and Russia's 0.48 million tonnes (-47.84% YoY, -25.03% MoM).
By type, the bulk of its coal imports was bituminous coal, totaling 3.87 million tonnes, down 15.34% YoY yet up 4.08% MoM; imports of other coal reached 0.52 million tonnes, down 36% YoY and 16.28% MoM.
From January to March, Taiwan's total coal imports were 12.89 million tonnes, down 8.67% YoY, while the total import value was $3.3 billion, up 20.34% YoY.
In March, Taiwan imported 21,400 tonnes of coke, down 9.24% YoY but up 66.99% MoM, with an import value of $7.98 million, down 32.66% YoY but up 42.22% MoM.
