India's coal imports were 148.58 million tonnes during April 2022-February 2023, the first 11 months of the fiscal year 2022-23, marking an increase of 32% from 112.38 million tonnes in the same period last year, showed data from mjunction.
India imported 50.5 million tonnes of coking coal during the same period, an increase of 7.69% from 46.89 million tonnes in a year earlier, according to mjunction.
Mjunction is an online buying and selling platform jointly operated by Steel Authority of India Limited and Tata Steel. The data is compiled by the mjunction platform based on the ship monitoring data received by shipping companies.
In February 2023, India's coking coal intakes reached 4.4 million tonnes, up 9.2% from 4.03 million tonnes in the previous year, and it also imported 11.68 million tonnes of non-coking coal, an increase of 24% from 9.42 million tonnes in the year-ago month.
India is one of the top five coal producers in the world. However, limited by factors such as coal quality and actual supply, the country still needs to import thermal coal to meet its demand. At the same time, India is also heavily dependent on coking coal imports.
Weak seaborne coal prices coupled with strong domestic demand have led to increased purchasing interest by Indian traders and downstream users, Vinaya Varma, CEO of the mjunction platform, said.
However, that rising domestic coal supplies in India and the rational coal inventories could restrain the future import volume.
