India's power generators saw their thermal coal imports rise for the second consecutive month in February, and surpassed 3 million tonnes again, more than doubling the year-ago level.
India's power producers imported 3.09 million tonnes of thermal coal in February, jumping 116.86% from 1.43 million tonnes in the same month last year and up 5.58% on the month, data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
Among all imported all by power companies last month, 1.3 million tonnes were directly burned, up 14.25% year on year and 38.42% month on month, and 1.8 million tonnes were blended with domestic coal, surging 266.59% year on year and ticking up 0.11% from a month ago.
In February, the proportion of coal imported by Indian power companies for mix accounted for 58.1% of the total, down from 61.28% in January.
Among power companies blending imported coal with the domestic, 7 state-owned power enterprises imported 948,000 tonnes and 11 private enterprises imported 614,600 tonnes; among those directing burning imported coal for power generation, one state-owned enterprise imported 51,700 tonnes and 12 private power enterprises imported 1.24 million tonnes.
In February, NTPC imported most thermal coal, at 766,900 tonnes, followed by MSPGCL, at 225,400 tonnes.
In the first eleven months of this fiscal (April 2022-February 2023), Indian power companies imported 50.84 million tonnes of thermal coal, a 110% jump from 24.16 million tonnes in the same period last year.
