Indonesian coal producer PT Bumi Resources Tbk has reported a decrease of 1 million tonnes in coal production during the first quarter of this year, citing rainfall impact.
The company's coal production was 15 million tonnes in this period, a 6.25% decline from the same period last year when it was 16 million tonnes.
Bumi had submitted a plan to Indonesia's energy ministry to produce around 80 million tonnes of coal by 2023. The company's annual coal production target for this year is 81.35 million tonnes, an increase of about 13% from the 2022 target of 71.9 million tonnes.
However, the company faces challenges in achieving this target due to geological conditions, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, coal prices, and increased coal production in China, as well as China's resumption of coal imports from Australia, which could put pressure on Indonesian coal production and exports.
The company expects an increase in production from April to June due to a slowdown in rainfall.
