Australia May coal exports to top destination Japan surge 37.26% MoM, Kpler

Australia exported 8.73 million tonnes of coal to its No.1 destination Japan in May, surging 37.26% month on month yet still 4.60% lower compared with the year-ago level, according to cargo tracking data from Kpler.


Coal exports to second-ranked China stood at 5.40 million tonnes, dipping 0.51% from April but well above 63,500 tonnes from the previous year, data showed.


India-bound shipments were 3.28 million tonnes, up 6.72% month on month but down 18.37% from a year ago.


Exports to Asia posted a sequential increase of 13.11% and a yearly gain of 8.60% to 26.03 million tonnes, data showed.


Shipments to Europe declined 30.51% from April and fell 16.35% from a year ago to 0.603 million tonnes.



In May, the total coal exports of the country rose 10.07% and 5.38% respectively from a month and a year earlier to 31.07 million tonnes.


In the first five months of 2023, Australian coal exports totaled 139.54 million tonnes, down 1.74% on year.
