Japan imported 13.98 million tonnes of coal in March, falling 16.4% year on year, preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance showed on April 20.
The imports were worth 602.58 billion yen ($4.50 billion), rising 28.4% year on year, the data showed.
Imports from the U.S. dropped 19.3% on the year to 891,000 tonnes, while the value jumped 26.3% year on year to 33.77 billion yen. Receipts from Russia dropped 55.4% to 651,000 tonnes, while value of the imports fell 52.8% to 21.17 billion yen.
In March, Japan imported 8.51 million tonnes of thermal coal, down 19.9% year on year, with import value at 376.2 billion yen, up 44.4% year on year.
Thermal coal imports from the U.S. were 517,000 tonnes, up 32.8% year on year; value rose 250.4% on the year to 23.63 billion yen. Russian thermal coal imports fell 21.7% year on year to 597,000 tonnes, with value down 22.9% year on year to 18.92 billion yen.
Japan imported 5.72 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas in March, down 12% year on year; value rose 4.5% on the year to 596.44 billion yen.
