Global mining major Glencore produced 26.90 million tonnes of thermal coal in January-March 2023, down 5.6% from 28.50 million tonnes a year ago, the company said in its quarterly report on April 21.
Thermal coal production from its Australian assets totaled 14.40 million tonnes over the period, of which output for export purposes totaled 12.90 million tonnes, down 3.7% on the year, and output for sales in the country was 1.50 million tonnes, a year-on-year rise of 7.1%.
Glencore produced 4 million tonnes of coal in its South African assets over the same period, including 3.20 million tonnes for export, down 5.9% year on year and 0.8 million tonnes for domestic use, falling 27.3%. The decline was mainly affected by coal mine geological conditions changes.
Coal production in its 100%-owned Cerrejon coal mine in Colombia totaled 5.40 million tonnes during the reporting period, falling 12.9% on the year due to strike.
Glencore's metallurgical coal production totaled 3.10 million tonnes during January-March, rising 3.3% year on year. Of that, coking coal production was down 4.8% year on year to 2 million tonnes, while semi-soft coking coal was up 22.2% to 1.10 million tonnes.
The company kept its production guidance for 2023 unchanged at 105-115 million tonnes.
