Global miner Anglo American produced 3.53 million tonnes of metallurgical coal in the first quarter of 2023, up 59% year on year but down 24% from the previous quarter, its latest quarterly production report showed on April 25
The output of hard coking coal was 2.84 million tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 62% yet a quarter-on-quarter decrease of 22%; the output of PCI and semi-soft coking coal was 691,000 tonnes, up 46% from a year ago but down 31% quarter on quarter; the production of export thermal coal stood at 284,000 tonnes, a year-on-year decrease of 33% and a quarter-on-quarter fall of 34%.
The company said the increase in coking coal production primarily due to all three underground longwall operations running during the quarter.
The company's metallurgical coal sales were 3.33 million tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 37% but a quarter-on-quarter decrease of 21%.
Among them, the sales of hard coking coal was 2.70 million tonnes, up 49% year on year yet down 13% from a quarter ago; sales of PCI and semi-soft coking coal was 635,000 tonnes, down 3% from a year ago and 43% from a quarter earlier; sales of export thermal coal were 402,000 tonnes, an year-on-year increase of 19% and a decrease of 15% from the preceding quarter.
The company maintains its full-year coal production target unchanged at 16-19 million tonnes.
Anglo American's iron ore output was 15.08 million tonnes during the given period, a year-on-year increase of 15% but a quarter-on-quarter decrease of 4%. Iron ore sales were 14.55 million tonnes, up 5% from a year ago and 5% from the preceding quarter.
The annual iron ore production target is 57-61 million tonnes.
During the same period, the company's copper output stood at 178,100 tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 28% but a quarterly decrease of 27%. The annual production target is 840,000-930,000 tonnes.
