A vessel loaded with 80,000 tonnes of Australian coal docked at northeastern China's Lianyungang port lately, marking the return of coal shipments from Australia after two years of absence, local media reported.
Australian coal imports had been unofficially banned in China since October 2020 due to worsened trade ties between the two countries. Beijing decided to resume coal trade with Canberra early this year, primarily allowing four state companies to import coal and latter further lifting the restriction to allow traders and other companies to import.
Kpler's tracking data showed Lianyungang port imported an average monthly 150,890 tonnes of Australian coal during January-October in 2020 before the official ban was imposed.
