Northwestern China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region produced a total 6.66 million tonnes of crude steel in the first half of 2023, rising 3.9% from the previous year, according to Xinjiang's iron and steel association.
Pig iron output in the region totaled 5.72 million tonnes during the same period, up 0.5% on the year; and finished steel products reached 7.40 million tonnes, down 1.3% from a year ago.
In June alone, Xinjiang churned out 1.34 million tonnes of crude steel, decreasing 1.7% year on year and 7.6% month on month; pig iron production fell 7.6% on the year and 5.1% on the month to 1.12 million tonnes; and steel products output stood at 1.66 million tonnes, down 2.7% compared to last year yet up 1.6% from May, data showed.
During January-June, accumulated finished steel production in key member firms totaled 6.55 million tonnes, up 7.0% from a year earlier, while steel products sales were registered at 6.45 million tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 12.6%.
