Northern China's Shanxi province, known for its abundant coal resources, achieved significant raw coal output in the first half of 2023, producing 678 million tonnes, data from local authorities showed.
This substantial output accounted for approximately 29.5% of China's total coal production during the January-June period, solidifying Shanxi's position as the country's largest coal-producer.
As the peak electricity consumption season approaches, Shanxi has ramped up its coal production, transporting approximately 2 million tonnes of coal daily to consumption areas across the nation.
The province has set a coal production target of nearly 1.37 billion tonnes for the whole year of 2023, aiming to continue its growth trend from the previous year when coal output increased by 8.7%.
The provincial authorities have emphasized that while boosting coal production, workplace safety remains a top priority. Shanxi has carefully managed its coal production capacity to meet the country's energy supply demand without compromising safety standards.
Shanxi accounts for 23%, which is the largest proportion, of China's coal reserves of 207.9 billion tonnes by the end of 2022, based on an official report issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources in April 2023.
