China Taiwan's coal imports in June climbed to a new high since September 2022, preliminary customs data showed.
In June, the region's coal imports totaled 5.9 million tonnes, rising 16.15% year on year and 22.91% month on month.
The import value for coal in June was $1.16 billion, down 10.27% year on year but up 9.24% month on month. The average import price was calculated at $196.65/t, down 22.75% year on year and 11.12% month on month.
Australia remained the largest source of coal imports to Taiwan in June, totaling 3.08 million tonnes (+4.89% YoY, +16.91% MoM), followed by Indonesia at 1.76 million tonnes (+4.23% YoY, +48.13% MoM) and Russia at 0.8 million tonnes (+123.12% YoY, +38.79% MoM).
By type, the bulk of its coal imports was bituminous coal, totaling 4.54 million tonnes, up 19.71% YoY and 14.17% MoM; imports of other coal reached 1.36 million tonnes, up 5.94% YoY and 64.64% MoM.
From January to June, Taiwan's total coal imports were 28.79 million tonnes, down 6.39% YoY, while the total import value was $6.74 billion, down 1.04% YoY.
In June, Taiwan imported 13,800 tonnes of coke, falling 18.74% YoY and 3.16% MoM, with an import value of $4.36 million, diving 58.78 % YoY and 14.03% MoM. The total coke imports in January-June fell 26.27% year on year to 84,700 tonnes, with value down 46.21% to $32.48 million.
