China Taiwan's coal imports in May sank to a new low of the month since 2011, preliminary customs data showed.
In May, the region's coal imports totaled 4.8 million tonnes, slumping 26.74% year on year and down 8.48% month on month.
The import value for coal in May was $1.06 billion, down 33.62% year on year and 14.33% month on month. The average import price was calculated at $221.26/t, down 9.39% year on year and 6.39% month on month.
Australia remained the largest source of coal imports to Taiwan in May, totaling 2.63 million tonnes (-28.03% YoY, -5.64% MoM), followed by Indonesia's 1.19 million tonnes (-37.03% YoY, -1.81% MoM) and Russia's 0.58 million tonnes (-14.67% YoY, +7.13% MoM).
By type, the bulk of its coal imports was bituminous coal, totaling 3.98 million tonnes, down 23.61% YoY and 6.78% MoM; imports of other coal reached 0.82 million tonnes, down 38.7% YoY and 15.52% MoM.
From January to May, Taiwan's total coal imports were 22.89 million tonnes, down 10.86% YoY, while the total import value was $5.59 billion, up 1.35% YoY.
In May, Taiwan imported 14,300 tonnes of coke, falling 27.57% YoY but jumping 156.5% MoM, with an import value of $5.08 million, diving 55.32% YoY but surging 160% MoM.
