Coal imports through India's 12 state-run ports hit a new high in May since April 2015, with year-on-year growth surpassing 25%, official data showed.
The 12 ports imported a total of 17.48 million tonnes of coal in May, jumping 25.22% year on year (YoY) and up 5.99% month on month (MoM), data from the India Ports Association showed.
Thermal coal imports at these ports reached 11.93 million tonnes, rising 14.04% YoY and 0.1% MoM, while coking coal imports stood at 5.55 million tonnes, up 58.7% YoY and 21.35% MoM, data showed.
Paradip port in East India received most thermal coal among all these ports in May, at 4.38 million tonnes, up 19.63% YoY and 6.08% MoM.
Kolkata, also along the east coast, imported most coking coal last month at 2.27 million tonnes, soaring 194.1% YoY and up by 66.28% MoM.
Imports at these ports totaled 33.97 million tonnes during the first two months of the fiscal year 2023-24 (April-May), a 21.12% rise from the year prior. Thermal coal imports reached 23.85 million tonnes, up 20.23 % YoY, and coking coal imports 10.12 million tonnes, up 23.28%.
The total coal handling volume at the 12 ports reached 134 million tonnes during the period, up 2.39% from a year ago.
India's 12 state-owned ports are Kolkata, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Ennore, Chennai, Tuticorin, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), and Kandla.
