Vietnam's coal imports, including those from foreign-invested enterprises, reached 5.09 million tonnes in May, up 87.12% from the same month of 2022 and 42.23% from April, preliminary customs data showed.
The May volume hit a new high since September 2020.
The data further revealed that Vietnam's coal import value in May amounted to $680 million, down 5.06% year on year but up 14.05% month on month.
Vietnam imported the most coal from Indonesia in May, jumping 94.42% on the year, and 1.76 million tonnes were imported from Australia, up 42.08%. Imports from Russia soared 240% to 316,700 tonnes.
From January to May, Vietnam's total coal imports reached 17.02 million tonnes, a notable 39.05% increase year on year. However, the import value during this period amounted to $2.7 billion, dropping 13.77% year on year.
