The peak electricity load of China Southern Power Grid (CSG) reached 226 GW on July 10, hitting a new high in history, reflecting growing power demand in southern China amid extreme heatwaves.
China Southern Grid, which covers power transmission for five provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan and Hainan and serves a population of 230 million, predicted the peak load to continue to rise to 245 GW this summer, representing a 10% rise from the peak recorded last summer.
According to the National Meteorological Center, the high temperatures will continue in the south in coming days of the month, with some areas to experience temperatures of 38-40 Celsius degrees.
The gradual recovery of economic growth has also been a key driver of the rising electricity demand in the southern region. Data shows the peak load of the grid exceeded the 200-GW threshold 36 days earlier compared to the previous year.
Since the end of May, the grid's peak load has approached historical levels several times. Preliminary statistics from CSG revealed that the total electricity consumption in the five provinces reached 722.5 TWh from January to June, a 5.2% year-on-year increase.
Among the provinces, Hainan exhibited the highest growth rate in electricity consumption, while Guangdong and Guangxi experienced stable growth.
In terms of sectors, both the primary (mainly the agriculture sector) and tertiary (mainly the services sector) industries witnessed significant increases in electricity usage, and residential electricity consumption presented steady growth.
By industry, the manufacturing sector has gradually rebounded, with notable contributions from high-tech and equipment manufacturing industries. The electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing sector, and the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector, recorded electricity consumption growth rates exceeding 10% year-on-year.
