Thailand's thermal coal (bituminous and sub-bituminous coal) imports in March slumped 27.96% year on year but strongly rebounded by 28.12% month on month to 1.9 million tonnes, customs data showed.
Bituminous coal imports reached 589,300 tonnes in March, down 34.21% year on year but surging 74.07% month on month. The bulk came from Australia at 418,700 tonnes, jumping 54.96% from 270,200 tonnes imported in the same month a year earlier; shipments from Indonesia stood at 170,000 tonnes, down 3.8% year on year.
Sub-bituminous coal imports totaled 1.31 million tonnes, down 24.74% year on year but up 14.51% month on month. Imports from Indonesia reached 1.17 million tonnes, surging 51.78% on the year, and receipts from Australia were 139,000 tonnes, compared with zero a year ago.
Anthracite imports were only 1,731 tonnes, compared with 371 tonnes a year ago and 134 tonnes a month ago.
In March, the country didn't import any coking coal.
In January-March, Thailand's thermal coal imports reached 5.47 million tonnes, ticking up 0.26% year on year. Bituminous coal imports reached 1.7 million tonnes, down 9.32% year on year; sub-bituminous coal imports rose 5.28% to 3.77 million tonnes.
The country's coal consumption amounted to 5.34 million tonnes during the first two months of 2023, down 4.08% year on year, official data showed. This included 3.28 million tonnes burned by power generation, up 1.07% year on year. Power generation accounted for 61.5% of the country's total coal use over the period.
