Russian Energy Minister Nikolai Shulyginov said that the beginning of 2023 saw a decrease in coal production in the country, but is expected to balance out by the end of the year to maintain the level of production of 2022.
"For coal, we are expecting to maintain the production of 2023 on par with 2022, which has already recovered to the pre-pandemic level," Shulyginov said at a meeting of the Energy Ministry. "At the beginning of the year, our coal production was declining, but we hope to balance the situation going forward."
According to data from the Russian Federal Statistics Service, the country's coal production in January was 34.9 million tonnes, down 1.8% from January 2022 and 19.3% from December. Russia's coal production increased 0.3% to 442 million tonnes in 2022, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Novak said in January.
Shulyginov also noted that, according to forecasts, oil production in Russia in 2023 will be slightly lower due to voluntary production cuts aimed at stabilizing the market. He said that gas production this year may also fall due to European consumers' rejection of Russian natural gas and the inability to quickly change the direction of exports.
Information provided by Shulyginov in a speech at the Russian State Duma in mid-March showed that oil and condensate gas in Russia increased by 2% to 535.1 million tonnes in 2022, while natural gas production decreased 11.7% to 673.8 billion cubic meters.
