India's domestic coal production is forecast to fall by some 21 million tonnes during April-June compared with the projected output due to logistical constraints, local media reported, citing the federal power ministry.
Supply from state-run Coal India and Singareni Collieries and the captive companies is estimated to fall to about 201 million tonnes during the quarter from the previously planned 222 million tonnes, the ministry said in a letter sent to Indian states.
India's plan to boost domestic coal supply is to some extent hindered by insufficient transportation infrastructure, including road and railway, especially during the demand peak period in summer.
State governments were directed by the ministry to make arrangements in advance to fill the supply gap and avoid power shortages. Some Indian utilities are looking for pre-monsoon supplies following governments' directions on coal blending.
