China continued to tap into existing coal production capacity in the first half of 2023, and maintained high coal stocks at all links of the society.
Coal enterprises held around 69 million tonnes of coal in stocks by the end of June, rising 11.4% year on year, and coal stocks at thermal power plants increased 28 million tonnes to 200 million tonnes, which is enough to consume for 30 days, the highest level in record, according to the China National Coal Association.
Main ports in China had 75.02 million tonnes of coal, up 17.8% on the year, data showed.
Coal demand remained buoyed in January-June as China's industrial activities recovered steadily. During the period, the country's coal-based power generation increased 7.5% year on year, with growth in June alone at 14.2%.
The nation's crude steel and cement output both ticked up 1.3% year on year.
Raw coal production increased 97 million tonnes or 4.4% year on year to 2.3 billion tonnes from January to June, while coal imports jumped 107 million tonnes or 93% to 222 million tonnes.
Combined coal production in Shanxi, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang accounted for 81% of China's total, while the growth of the four provinces took up 87%, making great contributions to stable energy supply in summer.
