The US's coal output was estimated at 11.16 million short tons (10.13 million tonnes) over the week ending May 27, up 0.21% week on week but down 0.13% year on year, showed data from Energy Information Administration on June 1.
Coal production in Wyoming and Montana combined was estimated at 4.94 million short tons, falling 0.47% from a week ago and 5.26% from a year ago.
Illinois's output was estimated at 811,000 short tons, up 4.86% from the week prior and 7.83% from the year before, and Appalachian coal production was estimated at 3.08 million short tons, up 0.69% from a week ago but down 1.55% from a year ago.
Over the first 21 weeks of 2023, US coal output totaled 244 million short tons, up 1.8% from 239 million short tons a year ago.
U.S. rail coal shipments were 63,220 rail cars, increasing 148 cars from a week ago but declining 2389 cars from a year ago. The year-to-date rail coal shipments totaled 1.38 million rail cars, up 1.6% year on year.
