Japan imported a total 13.23 million tonnes of coal in April, falling 1.6% on the year, showed the preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance on May 18.

The value of imports was 518.27 billion yen ($3.74 billion), rising 9.8% year on year, the data showed.

Imports from the U. S. rose 29.4% from a year ago to 830,000 tonnes, and the value soared 127% to 35.32 billion yen. Receipts from Russia dropped 80.8% compared with the previous year to 270,000 tonnes, which was worth 10.15 billion yen, a 79.6% decrease.

In April, Japan imported 7.28 million tonnes of thermal coal, down 10.8% year on year, with import value at 283.97 billion yen, up 10.4% year on year.

Thermal coal imports from the U.S. were 265,000 tonnes, down 2.1% year on year; value rose 149.9% on the year to 14.42 billion yen. Russian thermal coal imports fell 73.2% year on year to 270,000 tonnes, with value down 70.2% year on year to 10.15 billion yen.

Japan imported 4.53 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas in April, down 18.7% from the preceding year; value fell 24.8% on the year to 421.99 billion yen.
