China Taiwan's coal imports in April hit a new high since November 2022, preliminary customs data showed.
In April, the region's coal imports totaled 5.25 million tonnes, up 4.76% year on year and 19.6% month on month.
The import value for coal in April was $1.24 billion, up 5.83% year on year and 12.75% month on month. The average import price was calculated at $236.37/t, up 1.02% year on year but down 5.73% month on month.
Australia remained the largest source of coal imports to Taiwan in April, totaling 2.79 million tonnes (+12.55% YoY, +7.98% MoM), followed by Indonesia's 1.21 million tonnes (-19.05% YoY, +29.89% MoM) and Russia's 0.54 million tonnes (-13.82% YoY, +12.45% MoM).
By type, the bulk of its coal imports was bituminous coal, totaling 4.27 million tonnes, up 15.92% YoY and 10.22% MoM; imports of other coal reached 0.97 million tonnes, down 26.51% YoY but surging 89% MoM.
From January to April, Taiwan's total coal imports were 18.08 million tonnes, down 5.41% YoY, while the total import value was $4.53 billion, up 15.6% YoY.
In April, Taiwan imported 5,600 tonnes of coke, slumping 73.57% YoY and 74.06% MoM, with an import value of $19.42 million, diving 83.01% YoY and 75.67% MoM.
