Coal production in Russia's Kuzbass totaled 35.20 million tonnes over January-February in 2023, decreasing 2.80 million tonnes or 7.4% year on year, data from Ministry of Coal Industry of Kuzbass showed.
Kuzbass is the largest of four major coal-producing basins in Russia, accounting for about 60% of the total production and half of total exports of the country.
Open-cast coal production was 22.80 million tonnes, down 9.2% year on year, while underground coal output was 12.40 million tonnes, down 3.9%.
Thermal coal production was 23.90 million tonnes over the period, down 12.8% year on year, and coking coal output increased 6.6% to 11.30 million tonnes.
During the first two months, local miners in Kuzbass delivered around 30.10 million tonnes of coal to end users, inching down 0.3% year on year.
Specifically, 20.10 million tonnes were exported, up 3.1% year on year; 4.90 million tonnes were supplied to metallurgical firms, down 5.8%; and 3.10 million tonnes were shipped to local power plants, flat from a year ago.
As of March 1, Kuzbass had 20.70 million tonnes of coal in stock, up 3.50 million tonnes or 20.3% from a year earlier.
