India is expected to step up efforts to ensure power supply during peak months of April and May, in a bid to avoid power cuts amid surging demand.
The country's power ministry said on March 9 it has taken several steps from production to transportation to ensure power availability during the upcoming summer months.
Coal-fired power plants have been asked to arrange maintenance in advance to ensure smooth operation during the peak period, while imported coal-based power plants have been requested to run at full capacity from March 16. Coal power plants should stock sufficient coal inventories, according to the power ministry.
Railway bureau has also been requested to ensure enough capacity for coal transportation.
India is forecast to face power shortage during April and May partly due to lagged increment of new coal-fired and hydropower capacity that made the country's power supply fall short of surging demand.
