Coal imports through India's 12 state-run ports declined over 10% on both year-on-year and month-on-month basis in June, official data showed.
The 12 ports imported a total of 15.57 million tonnes of coal in June, decreasing 10.21% year on year (YoY) and 10.93% month on month (MoM), data from the India Ports Association showed.
These ports' coal imports in May this year hit a new high since April 2015.
Thermal coal imports at these ports reached 10.7 million tonnes, falling 7.25% YoY and 10.3% MoM, while coking coal imports stood at 4.87 million tonnes, down 16.09% YoY and 12.27% MoM, data showed.
Paradip port in East India received most thermal coal among all these ports in June, at 4.29 million tonnes, down 3.05% YoY and 2.1% MoM.
Kolkata, also along the east coast, imported most coking coal last month at 1.67 million tonnes, falling 9.1% YoY and 26.4% MoM.
Imports at these ports totaled 49.54 million tonnes during the first three months of the fiscal year 2023-24 (April-June), a 8.01% rise from the year prior. Thermal coal imports reached 34.56 million tonnes, up 7.82 % YoY, and coking coal imports 14.99 million tonnes, up 8.44%.
The total coal handling volume at the 12 ports reached 200 million tonnes during the period, up 1.74% from 197 million tonnes a year ago.
India's 12 state-owned ports are Kolkata, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Ennore, Chennai, Tuticorin, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), and Kandla.
