India's coal production witnessed a significant growth of 8.4% in the first quarter of the current fiscal year (April-June 2023-24), reaching 222.9 million tonnes compared to 205.6 million tonnes during the same period last year, according to a statement by the Ministry of Coal.
Coal India Limited (CIL), the country's largest coal producer, achieved a growth rate of 9.85%, producing 175.35 million tonnes in the period compared with 159.63 million tonnes in the previous year.
Captive mines also demonstrated a growth of 4.74%, producing 30.48 million tonnes in 2023-24 as compared to 29.10 million tonnes in 2022-23 during the same period. These achievements have contributed to the positive momentum in the coal sector as a whole.
The ministry further highlighted that cumulative coal dispatches also experienced an upward trend, reaching 239.69 million tonnes (provisional) in the first quarter of 2023-24, a growth of 6.97% compared to 224.08 million tonnes in the same period of the previous financial year.
