Coal output in the United States was estimated at 11.59 million short tons (10.52 million tonnes) over the week ending June 17, up 1.1% week on week and 1.64% year on year, showed data from Energy Information Administration on June 22.
Coal production in Wyoming and Montana combined was estimated at 5.14 million short tons, rising 0.42% from a week ago but down 5.21% from a year ago.
Illinois's coal output was estimated at 835,000 short tons, up 5.77% from the week prior and 17.86% from the year prior, while Appalachian coal production was estimated at 3.24 million short tons, increasing 1.58% from a week ago and 5.97% on the year.
Over the first 24 weeks of 2023, US coal output totaled 275 million short tons, up 0.4% from 274 million short tons a year ago.
U.S. rail coal shipments were 66,441 rail cars, increasing 731 from a week ago but declining 166 from a year ago. The year-to-date rail coal shipments totaled 1.58 million rail cars, up 1.3% year on year.
