China's industrial sectors registered a 5.1% year-on-year growth in power consumption to 2,327.8 TWh in the first five months of this year, showed the latest data from the China Electricity Council.
That accounted for 65.9% of China's total power use in the January-May period, and the manufacturing sector used 1,765.1 TWh of electricity, up 4.5% year on year.
The industrial sectors consumed 488.1 TWh of electricity in May, growing 4.1% on the year and taking up 67.6% of China's total power use, data showed.
The manufacturing sector consumed 380 TWh of electricity in the same period, up 4.0% year on year. Daily power use averaged 12.26 TWh in May, up 530 GWh year on year but down 10 GWh from April.
The four major energy-intensive industries consumed 203 TWh of electricity in May, falling 0.6% year on year, and 970.5 TWh in the first five months, up 3.0% year on year.
Specifically, the chemical industry consumed 46.9 TWh in May, up 0.5% year on year, while the ferrous metallurgy industry consumed 51.8 TWh of electricity, down 8.2% year on year, while their total power consumption reached 229.7 TWh and 258 TWh respectively during the first five months, up 3.2% and down 0.9% year on year.
The non-ferrous metallurgy industry and building materials industry saw power consumption climb by 1.7% and 5.7% year on year to 64.8 TWh and 39.5 TWh respectively in May, and rise 3.7% and 8.1% year on year to 318.2 TWh and 164.6 TWh during January-May.
It is noted that, except for the ferrous metallurgy industry, which registered a month-on-month drop in May, all the rest three energy-guzzling industries posted month-on-month growths last month.
China consumed a total 3,532.5 TWh of electricity from January to May this year, growing 5.2% year on year, with May's power consumption at 722.2 TWh, up 7.4% from the preceding year.
