India is expected to invite the country's first tender for setting up offshore wind power generation capacity, said an official from the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy.
The process for the issuance has been in the final steps. As the tender is issued, it will help to foster the offshore wind sector in India, Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, the ministry's secretary said.
State governments of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat have already expressed willingness to buy offshore wind power generated off their respective coasts at a very competitive tariff of Rs 4 per unit for the initial few projects.
The total estimated offshore wind capacity off coasts of the two states is 70 GW, the official introduced. More deployments in other coastal states are under discussion.
International Energy Agency and International Renewable Energy Agency have projected a minimum threshold of 2,000 GW of offshore wind capacity globally by mid-century, to meet the 1.5 Degree target for limiting the earth's temperature rise.
