Mongolia's Tavantolgoi JSC started its first shipment of coal for export by rail on April 5, Montsame reported.
On April 5, 1,395 tonnes of coal in 44 containers carried by 22 wagons were transported from Tavantolgoi station to Gashuunsukhait station, according to a report.
Tavantolgoi JSC signed a coal transportation contract with Tavantolgoi Railway LLC of delivering a total of 500,000 tonnes of coal by railway in 2023. The two sides have started relevant efforts to boost rail coal shipments.
Compared with road transportation, the railway transportation cost from the Tavan Tolgoi coal mine to Gashuunsukhait border port reduced by 33-67%, and it also has high natural environmental and economic significance.
Presently, the Gashuunsukhait-Ganqimaodu port railway on the Mongolia-China border has not yet been connected, as the gauges of the railways on both sides are different and a transfer station needs to be built.
It was reported that the two sides have determined the cross-border connection point, and the relevant work is in progress. Mongolia aims to complete the cross-border railway connection within this year, according to Montsame.
