India's state-run miner Coal India Ltd. plans to supply 156 million tonnes of coal to domestic power utilities during the peak season April-June, during which scorching temperatures are expected to boost air-conditioning usage.
The company supplied a record of 153.2 million tonnes of coal to the power sector for the same period in 2022, jumping nearly 20% from the year-ago level.
This year, CIL is optimistic about supplying the planned volume and said it expects to have about 50 million tonnes of coal inventories at its pithead by the end of June.
By the end of March, CIL will have 68 million tonnes of coal at its pithead, and power plants are about to have another 32 million tonnes of coal in stocks.
In the 2023-24 fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, CIL aims to supply 610 million tonnes of coal to utilities, compared with total demand from the sector estimated at 821 million tonnes.
India's coal-fired power generation accounted for the bulk of the country's overall electricity generation, and the figure rose to 94.43 TWh in February, up from 87.65 TWh from a year ago, showed data from the Central Electricity Authority.
