Thailand Oct thermal coal imports up nearly 15% on yr

Thailand's thermal coal (bituminous and sub-bituminous coal) imports reached 1.68 million tonnes in October, up 14.97% year on year and 6.14% from the preceding month, customs data showed.


Bituminous coal imports reached 486,900 tonnes in October, up 43.31% year on year and 9.78% month on month. The bulk came from Australia at 275,700 tonnes, sagging 1.82% from a year earlier; shipments from Indonesia stood at 210,500 tonnes, compared with only 58,000 tonnes in October 2021.



Sub-bituminous coal imports totaled 1.19 million tonnes, up 6.39% year on year and 4.73% month on month. Imports from Indonesia reached 1.06 million tonnes, falling 0.5% year on year, and receipts from Australia were 131,500 tonnes, while the national didn't import any sub-bituminous coal in the same period last year.


Anthracite imports were only 1,313 tonnes, compared with 124 tonnes a year ago and 5,145 tonnes a month ago. Coking coal imports were zero in the month, down from 25 tonnes a month earlier.


From January to October, Thailand's thermal coal imports reached 17.58 million tonnes, down 12.82% year on year. Bituminous coal imports reached 4.93 million tonnes, down 33.76% year on year; sub-bituminous coal imports fell 0.59% to 12.66 million tonnes.


The country's coal consumption amounted to 30.34 million tonnes in January-September, up 4.62% year on year, official data showed. This included 15.59 million tonnes burned by power generation, down 1.48% year on year. Power generation accounted for 51.4% of the country's total coal use over the period.
