Russian Railways (RZD), the state-owned railway company in the country, reported an increase in coal exports through its rail network in the first half of 2023.
During the period, RZD exported 100.8 million tonnes of coal, a 1.8% rise compared to the same period last year, data showed.
The majority of the coal was transported through seaports, with a total of 93.6 million tonnes being transshipped, up 4.9% from January to June 2022. However, the volume of coal transported through border crossings slumped to 7.2 million tonnes.
In June 2023, coal exports amounted to 15.7 million tonnes, marking an 8.7% decline compared to the same month last year. According to sources, in June, Russia exported 6.9 million tonnes of coal to China, 2.3 million tonnes to India, 2.5 million tonnes to the United Arab Emirates, and 2.2 million tonnes to Turkey. Shipments to Japan and South Korea together totaled 1.1 million tonnes.
RZD considers the increase in the first half as a result of effective fulfillment of agreements with various regions, ensuring the transportation of coal to Far East ports.
From January to June 2023, RZD transported 26.8 million tonnes of coal from Kuzbass, 100% compliant with the agreement, 3.1 million tonnes from Khakassia (103.6% of the contractual volume), 4.5 million tonnes from Buryatia (112.3%), 0.3 million tonnes from Tuva (101.2%), and 12.6 million tonnes from Yakutia (99.2%).
"The transportation from Yakutia reached 12.6 million tonnes, with a slight delay in the agreement due to individual shippers not submitting their cargo on time, which only accounted for only 0.8% of total," explained Russian Railways.
