Australia's largest coal export port Newcastle saw its coal outflows climb to more than 10 million tonnes in February, yet the volume remained slightly lower compared with the year-ago level, data from Port of Newcastle showed.
The port exported 10.36 million tonnes of coal last month, down 1.54% year on year but rising 3.79% from the preceding month.
The exports were valued at $3.23 billion, a 21.77% rise year on year but falling 26.2% from January 2023.
Newcastle is the largest coal export port in Australia, and most of the coal produced in New South Wales is exported through this port. It is understood that New South Wales produces about 200 million tonnes of saleable coal per year, and 175 million are used for export.
Data showed that the number of coal ships loading at Newcastle port was 119 in February, up 2 from the previous month. The cumulative number of coal ships loading in 2023 was 236.
