Coal India Ltd. (CIL) , the state-owned coal mining company, continued to maintain double-digit growth in production last month, highlighting its pivotal role in ensuring energy security for the country.
In July, its coal production hit 53.6 million tonnes, a 13.4% rise against the same month last year, according to a statement released by CIL on August 1.
Over the period from April to July 2023, CIL's cumulative coal production reached 229.1 million tonnes, growing 10.7% surge compared to 207 million tonnes produced in the same period of 2022.
For the fiscal year 2023-2024, CIL has set an ambitious target to produce 780 million tonnes of coal. In the previous fiscal year (FY22-23), CIL accomplished a coal production of 703 million tonnes.
"All our subsidiaries have registered growth over the previous fiscal year, with SECL showing a remarkable increase of 10 million tonnes in production," a senior company official said.
Several subsidiaries of CIL, including Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL), Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL), and South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), have achieved progressive growth, surpassing their respective targets until July 2023.
In July, CIL's total coal supplies peaked at 58.3 million tonnes, a 7.2% growth compared to 54.4 million tonnes in July 2022.
During the period from April to July 2023, total coal supplies to all consuming sectors reached 244.5 million tonnes, marking a 5.7% increase over the 231.2 million tonnes supplied during the same period of last fiscal.
Notably, coal supplies to coal-fired power plants stood at 201.5 million tonnes until July of the ongoing fiscal year, witnessing a 1% rise.
To ensure a comfortable buffer for domestic coal-based power plants, coal stocks at their end stood at 33 million tonnes by the end of July. This figure is nearly on par with the beginning of the year, with minimal contraction. On the other hand, CIL's coal inventory remains at 53 million tonnes.
CIL reported an overburden of coal from mines, totaling 641 million cubic meters.
