China's manufacturing sector witnessed a positive growth in power consumption for the first half of 2023, particularly in high-tech and equipment manufacturing industries, according to a report by China Electricity Council (CEC) on July 20.
During January to June, power consumption in the manufacturing sector rose 4.3% compared with the same period last year, with the high-tech and equipment manufacturing industries showing an impressive 8.1% increase. Consumption goods manufacturing also showed a positive trend, growing by 3.0%, while other manufacturing industries saw an 8.1% increase.
Consumption in all industrial sectors increased 4.6% over the period, the report noted.
In June alone, industrial electricity consumption nationwide grew 2.4% YoY, with the manufacturing sector witnessing a 3.6% YoY increase. The daily average consumption in manufacturing reached 12.7 TWh, up 2.7% YoY and 3.6% MoM. High-tech and equipment manufacturing achieved substantial growth of 9.5% YoY, while consumption goods manufacturing increased 3.7% YoY, and other manufacturing industries experienced a remarkable 9.7% YoY growth.
China's total power consumption totaled 4,307.6 TWh over January-June, up 5.0% from the same period last year, data from the National Energy Administration showed.
The CEC revealed a positive trend in electricity usage across 29 provinces and regions. From January to June, all provinces and regions, except Guizhou and Hubei, experienced a rise in overall electricity consumption.
Among them, 16 provinces and regions outpaced the national average growth rate, with five regions achieving growth rates exceeding 10%: Hainan, Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, Guangxi, and Tibet.
In June, electricity consumption increased in 25 provinces and regions, with seven of them registering growth rates surpassing 10%, which were Beijing, Guangdong, Inner Mongolia, Fujian, Jilin, Hainan, and Tibet.
