Eastern China's Shandong province had 89 coal mines by June 30, 2023, with 87 in operation and 2 under construction, according to data released by the local energy bureau.
These coal mines had a combined capacity of 124.51 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), data showed from the Shandong Energy Bureau . Of this, the capacity of the operating coal mines totaled 122.26 Mtpa, with 91.57 Mtpa or nearly 75% owned by Shandong Energy Group.
Coking coal capacity stood at 118.83 Mtpa, representing 97% of the total, while thermal coal at 3.43 Mtpa, less than 3%, according to Sxcoal's coal mines database. Over 75% of the coking coal capacity was run by Shandong Energy.
The capacity under construction totaled 2.25 Mtpa by end-June, including 1.80 Mtpa of coking coal capacity, which was fully owned by Shandong Energy, and 0.45 Mtpa of thermal coal capacity, which was located in Jining city.
Shandong ranked ninth in raw coal production and third in coking coal output among other provinces and regions during the first five months of this year, according to data maintained by Sxcoal.
