Coal inventories at 18 rail-fed power plants in central China's Hubei province jumped 20.2% from a year earlier to 5.91 million tonnes as of June 24, according to the local subsidiary of China State Railway Group.
Based on the current coal consumption, the coal stocks could last for 51 days of power generation. This far surpasses the critical threshold of 7 days. It would provide a robust guarantee for meeting the province's energy demand, particularly during the high-demand summer period.
Rail-delivered coal shipments towards Hubei has reached a cumulative total of 16.98 million tonnes so far this year, marking a year-on-year increase of 2.09 million tonnnes, or 14.1%, data from China Railway Wuhan Group showed.
It is understood that approximately 50% of Hubei's electricity is generated by coal-fired plants, which heavily rely on coal transported by railways. Out of all the 20 coal-fired power plants in the province, 18 receive coal supply via railways.
The Wuhan Railway emphasized its commitment to ensuring the smooth transportation of coal for Hubei. They will continue to prioritize coal transportation in areas such as planning approval, empty car deployment, loading and unloading coordination, and station arrangements.
Additionally, they will actively coordinate with relevant railway authorities to ensure the timely delivery of coal to Hubei, maximize coal transportation capacity, and enhance the province's coal inventory.
