Coal exports from Australia's Newcastle port grew compared to the previous month, marking a new high in five months, while presenting a year-on-year decline of more than 5%.
The port exported 11.72 million tonnes of coal in May, down 5.74% on the year but up 4.78% from the previous month, showed data from Port of Newcastle.
The exports amounted to A$3.102 billion ($2.073 billion), down 36.53% year on year and 7.79% month on month. That put the average export price at A$264.71/t ($177.01/t), down 32.66% from a year earlier and 12% from the previous month.
From January to May this year, Newcastle exported a total of 54.74 million tonnes of coal, down 8.1% year on year; the cumulative value was $17.73 billion, down 14.68% year on year.
In May, the number of coal ships loaded at Newcastle port was 124, up 4 from the previous month. The cumulative number of coal ships loaded in January-May was 608.
