Vietnam aims to increase its power generation capacity by more than double to 158 GW by 2030, according to a government document.
The capacity target for 2030 is up from 69 GW in 2020, the document showed.
The government has slightly lowered its offshore wind power target. It expected offshore wind installations to reach 6 GW by 2023, below the 7 GW proposed in Vietnam's draft power plan released in December 2022 but still enough to attract billions of dollars in foreign investment.
Vietnam pledged at the U.N. climate conference in November 2021 (COP26) to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. According to the government document, Vietnam will eliminate all coal-fired power plants by 2050 to meet that commitment.
However, coal-fired installed capacity will increase from 21.4 GW in 2020 to 30.1 GW by 2030, making up 19% of Vietnam's power mix, with coal remaining the country's biggest power source, the document showed.
By 2030, hydropower will become Vietnam's second-biggest energy source, followed by liquefied natural gas-fired power and onshore wind power.
